Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a program that can help me with my lawn?

Yes. The Green Grass program Grass program helps lawns, environment and saves money. This program helps homeowners know they are fertilizing their lawn at the right time of year and will show how much fertilizer their specific lawn area actually needs. There will be an added benefit to our community at large. These recommendations when followed will help keep our limited water supply clean and nutrient free.

How often should I mow my lawn?
Mow when your lawn needs it. The mower should never remove more than 1/3 of the height of the grass. Doing so stresses the grass and makes it more susceptible to weeds, and diseases.  You can also read what Mike Goatley has to say on this: Turf and Garden Tips.

When should I fertilize my lawn and how much?
The first step is to test your soil.  For more information, see our Soil Testing Instructions.  Then read what the pros from around Virginia are saying: Lawn Fertilization in Virginia.

What kind of grass should I plant?
The answer to this question is complicated as you will see in this article.  Virginia Tech has ongoing research on varieties. Here is the link to their current results:
http://pubs.ext.vt.edu/CSES/CSES-17/CSES-17_pdf.pdf

Should I collect my grass clippings?
It can be good for our environment and good for your lawn, read this: Mowing To Recycle Grass Clippings: Let the Clips Fall Where They May!

I have weeds in my lawn. What should I do?
Most weeds in turf can be controlled with proper fertilization, the right soil pH, mowing at the correct height and controlling other pests. Here is a helpful podcast with text from Virginia Tech:

What kinds insects can damage my lawn?
Our biggest insect problems come from grubs or beetle larva. But a lawn can handle many grubs before they do significant damage. Here is a link to the VA Turf Pest Management Guide section. It covers ants, sod web worms, grubs, chinch bugs, mites and more: Lawn Insects.

Do I need to dethatch my lawn?
If the thatch is more than 1/2 inch thick it can be a place for diseases to get started and should the lawn should be dethatched. If the thatch is causing the crown of the grass to become established above the soil level, then yes, dethatch. Thatch is usually caused when more than 1/3 of the lawn is cut during mowing and left on the lawn.

I have moss, what do I do?
You may decide you like it; it is green and grows where it is hard for grass to germinate. But if not; here is a publication from the Extension: Lawn Moss: Friend or Foe?

I still have questions. Where do I turn?
