Fauquier School Programs

Ready, Set Grow!

1st grade - introduces gardening and environmental concepts based on Standards of Learning. Children plant flowers, raise them in the classroom, and plant them in the school landscape. Teams of Master Gardeners make three visits to each participating classroom in late Spring. The first visit features a power point presentation, a hands-on display table, and actual planting of flower seeds in milk cartons. The second visit is to check on germination and make sure the plants are being cared for properly. The third visit is to plant the seedlings in the school garden.

Super Soil Science

3rd grade - compliments the "Sensational Soil" in the Social Study Guide to Standards of Learning. Students participate in discussions about our fabulous soil and observe soil erosion, profile, and particle size experiments. A teaching team of Master Gardeners is equipped to conduct highly visual experiments and demonstrations with a 45 minute presentation. The students are also guided to conduct their own scientific exploration of soil properties.

Insect Station - Farm Tour

Fauquier County Schools has a Farm Tour field trip where the 3rd and 7th graders tour a working farm with rotating Stations where presentations are given to the students.  Each station is a different topic such as insects, soil, dairy cows, beef cattle, horses, pasture, water, etc… The Fauquier County Master Gardeners have the Insect Station. There is a tour  in the Spring and one in Fall.
